PhilHealth Empowers MisOcc Health Workers to Bring Free Care Closer to Communities

SINACABAN, Misamis Occidental — PhilHealth-10 is strengthening community healthcare by training barangay health workers (BHWs) in Misamis Occidental to help more residents access free primary care services under the Yaman ng Kalusugan Program (YAKAP).

A total of 35 BHWs joined the Social Health Insurance Education Series (SHINES) on Sept. 8, where they learned how to explain YAKAP benefits and guide residents through the process of availing healthcare services.

PhilHealth Northern Mindanao Acting Regional Vice President Henry V. Almanon said the training aims to ensure that communities understand that healthcare services are a right and should be accessed before health conditions become serious.

Under YAKAP, qualified members can receive free consultations, cancer screenings, and medicines through accredited healthcare providers.YAKAP centers provide 21 basic medicines, while additional specialized medicines may be claimed through partner pharmacies. The program’s GAMOT package also provides up to ₱20,000 annual coverage per member.

PhilHealth said BHWs play an important role in spreading awareness and helping families maximize available health benefits.
