Camiguin Steps Up School Safety as Threats Move Online

CAMIGUIN — The provincial government of Camiguin is strengthening school safety measures to address both physical security risks and emerging threats in digital spaces.Gov. Xavier Jesus Romualdo said the province has conducted research on school safety, with the findings and proposed measures set to be discussed during the next Provincial School Board meeting.Romualdo said the planned approach will go beyond security checks, CCTV cameras, and metal detectors.

It will include early threat detection, risk reduction, prevention, mitigation, and response to incidents.The province is also looking at digital threats affecting young people. National Intelligence Coordinating Agency-10 Regional Director Felix Petel Jr. said online platforms can expose vulnerable youth to manipulation, coercion, and violent extremist content.

Petel called for early identification and prevention of online threats, with schools, families, communities, government agencies, and technology platforms working together to protect children.Meanwhile, the Department of Education Camiguin Division is coordinating with the Philippine National Police as it reviews and updates school safety protocols.

Schools are also conducting preparedness activities, including simulated responses to possible security incidents.The province said the strengthened measures aim to make schools safer while ensuring that threats are addressed before they escalate into physical harm.
