ZAMBOANGA CITY — Bureau of Customs (BOC) Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno said the agency will fully support the Philippine National Police (PNP) investigation into the shooting incident at Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) that left two students dead and another injured.
Nepomuceno visited the university after initial findings showed that one of the firearms used in the shooting was the service handgun of Customs Zamboanga Port District Police Chief Lt. Elias “Lars” Jalani II, the father of the suspect.Following the incident, Nepomuceno ordered the immediate suspension and removal of Jalani II from his post to allow a fair and independent investigation.
The BOC chief expressed sympathy to the victims, their families, and the Ateneo community, saying the agency stands with those affected by the tragedy.Nepomuceno said Jalani explained that he left his firearms inside his vehicle, which his son used for school.
He said it was unclear how the weapons were accessed and that the matter would be determined through the ongoing PNP investigation.The commissioner said Jalani may face administrative liability due to possible negligence in securing the firearms, while any criminal responsibility will depend on the results of the investigation.
Nepomuceno clarified that Jalani had two firearms—one issued by the BOC and another personally owned. He stressed that government-issued firearms must always be handled with proper care and responsibility.
The BOC assured authorities that it will provide all necessary documents and assistance to help in the investigation.Meanwhile, officials continued to extend support and sympathy to the ADZU community and the families affected by the school shooting.
